The sweet story of a girl who loves cupcakes will be brought to life by local performers beginning Friday.
With a cast of about 20 ranging in age from 5 to 22, "Pinkalicious: The Musical," based on the best-selling book "Pinkalicious" by Elizabeth Kann and Victoria Kann, will premiere at 6 p.m. Friday at the Performance Club Studio Theater in Wilmington. "The book is so popular – it's so fun, it's so whimsical. It's so playful, and what kid doesn't love cupcakes? What little girl doesn't love pink?" said LJ Woodard, who is the director of "Pinkalicious" as well as director of The Performance Club Studio, an acting studio for children and teens. "It's such a great story for boys and girls because it has such a great message about totally being yourself … and in the end, eating right, family time, quality time and what's important." In the story, the main character eats so many pink cupcakes she turns pink and has to eat green food to return to her normal color. The musical based on the book is currently being performed by professionals off-Broadway in New York and in Toronto. Locally, the role of the main character will be played by Maia Porzio, 9, a fourth-grader at Parsley Elementary School, with her mother and father being played by Cole Rassin, 15, and Ashley Gladden, 22, who is also the production's musical director and a voice teacher at Performance Club. The doctor who diagnoses the main character's cupcake affliction, Dr. Wink, is played by Gail Kelly, production coordinator of "Pinkalicious" and assistant director for the Performance Club. In addition to the musical, which has a run time of 50 minutes, those who attend can buy cupcakes from Coastal Cupcakes and will be treated to special giveaways, depending on the night. "On Fridays, Fuzzy Peach (Frozen Yogurt Bar) will be giving away gift certificates. On Saturdays, if you go to Sweet and Sassy and get your hair done like Pinkalicious, you get a free limo ride to the show," Woodard said. "On Mother's Day, you can win a Beauty Bar mother makeover."
