Eight years after graduating from business school, long-time friends Kristen Beckmeyer and Meredith Sullivan opened their second Coastal Cupcakes bakery at 7210 Wrightsville Avenue, next to the Atlantic View shopping center.
The first location was opened 10 months ago on Princess Street and was such a success the owners opened this second location to expand their service to the people of Wrightsville Beach, Beckmeyer said.
“It brings you back to your childhood,” she said,
The bakery has recipes for more than 45 different cupcake flavors that change with the season. During the upcoming summer months, the bakery will feature flavors like angel food cake, pink lemonade and creamsicle.referring to the cupcakes. “It’s a small treat that makes you feel better during these times.”
After graduating from the University of North Carolina at Wilmington’s Cameron School of Business in 2001, Sullivan and Beckmeyer had difficulty finding jobs in the Wilmington area and they had to move out of state.
They stayed in touch — hoping to return and start a business, Beckmeyer said. The years passed until one day Sullivan sent an e-mail about opening a cupcake bakery.
A little more than three months later the friends were owners of the first Coastal Cupcakes bakery in downtown Wilmington.
“Wilmington is such a great town for small businesses. We want to plan and succeed and grow,” Beckmeyer added. “(Cupcakes) are something that’s fun. It’s a craze going across the country. How can you not have fun baking and selling cupcakes?”
Although the new bakery is already open for business, the official grand opening celebration is scheduled for Saturday, May 30 beginning at noon. Beckmeyer said the staff will set up a table for kids to decorate cupcakes, there will be giveaways, cooking demonstrations and much more.
